“DAY OF DEAD HOLIDAY EXHIBITION

A Little Bit Merry, A Little Bit Scary!

by Emma Enriquez

December 4-14

Artist Emma Enriquez is bringing Day of Dead & Christmas together (ooh la la) in a fun and artistic way. Join us!

ARTIST BIO

Emma D. Enriquez is a LatinX artist living in Brooklyn, New York City. She is part of Generation X having returned to the world of art after career burnout as a lawyer in Los Angeles and single-motherhood. Her art reflects questions of identity and intersectionality as a middle-aged, first generation American with Mexican and German heritage. She is interested in what LatinX means today in the USA and globally. She draws from personal stories, Mexican murals and European expressionism to tell visual stories.

Since moving from Los Angeles to New York City in 2022, she has shown her art in two solo shows and 12 joint shows in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, and the Lower East Side. She was named an "outstanding" altar artist at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles for five years, with her most recent installation - "A Tribute to Florian Schneider (Kraftwerk)" - taking place on October 26, 2024. Some of her Day of Dead artwork will be shown in Miami at Art Satellite (December, 2024) along with the Art Satellite gallery in the Lower East Side of Manhattan (December 4 - 14, 2024).

PAST EXHIBITIONS

“THE CRITERION OF EMBARRASSMENT”

By WALKER SEYDELL

NoVEMBER

STATEMENT

"The Criterion of Embarrassment" marks Seydell's inaugural solo exhibition at SATELLITE. In this striking collection, the artist distills the essence of pop culture icons through the lens of Catholic imagery from his youth, transforming them into a compressed reflection of the hidden complexities of daily life. Scratch-graffitied mirrors are adorned with the visual detritus of dive bars, featuring bold homoerotic interpretations of martyrdom and Church-sanctioned suffering. At the back of the space, a trio of public urinals serves as a provocative reminder of the consumption intrinsic to this gritty everyday reality.

ARTIST BIO

Walker Seydell (b. 1990) is a multi-disciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn, NY. Walker grew up outside of Baltimore, MD where he achieved a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts in Painting at The Maryland Institute, College of Art. He graduated Magna cum Laude in 2012. Since then he has been involved in various group shows in Los Angeles, Baltimore and New York. He had his first solo show at La Bodega Gallery in Baltimore in 2013. His work spans numerous media from performance to video, painting, sculpture, and photography.

MONSTERVILLE

JUNE 2024 | NATE HESTER

“MONSTERVILLE” is Nate Hester’s first solo show at SATELLITE LES. MONSTERVILLE showcases his newest monumental works on paper. Here, toys, flowers, imaginary avatars, human figures, found objects, and pop culture aphorisms cavort in almost—but never fully— comprehensible ways. The language of maximalist collage is invoked to address the fragmentation and inclusive reintegration of modern living. Hester asserts: “I don’t know about y’all, but my life is a hot-mess-dumpster-fire. Like that Leonard Cohen song about the cracks letting the light in, the beauty for me is how I manage to stitch all the ripped-to-shreds pieces back together again.” Here, in the face of the predatory aggression of the adult world, intimate sensuality and soulful tenderness prevail and proclaim that everything belongs to everything.

Hester’s works are included in the permanent collections of the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the Allen Memorial Art Gallery at Oberlin College, the Newark Public Library, and the New York Public Library.

FIFTY YEARS

MAY 2024 | R. WAYNE REYNOLDS

“Fifty Years” is an exhibition that showcases the depth and history of artist R. Wayne Reynolds. In his first solo show at SATELLITE LES we focus on Reynolds “plein air mind scapes”. Our survey begins in 1972 and follows Reynolds along as he deftly produces a consistent & fresh body of work. From past to present this is a charged and engaging visual experience. Reynolds’ “plein air mind scapes” combine carefully rendered patterns, from natural and man-made sources.

“My Plein Air Mind Scapes evolve from man-made, and curvilinear natural forms, patterns, and textures that I absorb from my observations of land, sea, and sky. Choosing not to present a traditional rendering of those influences, I work spontaneously without a preconception or consideration of what they will become. My primary concern is to honor the continuity, harmony, and beauty that my memories are built with, and to capture the energy, detail, and clarity of life itself.” - R. Wayne Reynolds
